It is with renewed pleasure that I attended the Montmorency Falls Gala d’Elegance a venue located near in Quebec City, an event I haven’t visited since 2011. I arrived early enough to see and photograph the cars and avoid baking in the intense end of June sunshine!
Regular attendees, easy to spot by their vehicles, were there in large numbers. This allowed me to see some vehicles for the first time, like a 1970 Renault 10, some VW Beetles and a 1981 Honda Accord.
The better represented models were Mustangs, Camaro IROC-Z’s, a surprising amount of 1964-67 Ford Galaxie 500’s and Mopar muscle. There were also a good number of classic cars from the fifties that decided to show their chromes.
AN UNUSUAL DISCUSSION
The owner of a 1937 Packard installed a travel suitcase on the back of his clean car.
It contained period correct documents, and ladies under garments that he said were found when they first opened the suitcase.
When asked what colour his car was, he showed me a page that contained the actual metallic colour samples from the 30’s that some people found hard to believe.
AN INTERESTING DISCUSSION
A young owner of a 60’s Chrysler told me had no interest in Asian cars, unlike the young people from his generation. “I can pull you with this car!” he said jokingly. He told me he had owned four other cars before this big Chrysler.
When I ask him where the love for classic american cars come from, he answered me he grows up with this world, having parents owning classic cars since early age. Not all young people are Fast & Furious fans!
AN INSTRUCTIVE DISCUSSION
Another conversation, this time with an owner of a European model, a Renault 10 to be precise.
He told that during a trip to south of France, he was shopping for a French car, and came across an ad from a Quebec website saying he was looking for a Renault 10 for sale originally manufactured and sold in the province of Quebec. Renault had an assembly plant in Bromont, Quebec during the 70’s.
GTO OR LE MANS SPORT; WHICH MODEL WOULD YOU CHOSE IF YOU HAD TO BUY ONE
I was able to compare two Pontiacs, one a GTO and the other a Le Mans Sport, both from 1970. When requesting the values from their respective owners, I noticed a difference in price.
The Le Mans received an engine update from a 350 to 455 cubic inches. With my brother in law anxious to buy a GTO convertible, it allowed me to see the difference between two cars that had the same engine, without being the same model.
QUEBEC CITY, KINGDOM OF THE GALAXIE 500
Now these three Ford Galaxie 500 parked beside one another. You could see the difference between the 3 model years 1964, 1965, 1966.
Whether it’s from an interior point of view, the seats, the front of the car, the emblems, Ford letterings or the engine identification badges, the differences in design were very noticeable. I had a great time looking at all those diferent styling cues of the 3 Galaxies.
My day in Quebec ended in an antique shop with the purchase of a trophy from the 40’s, a metal billiard trophy cup with handles on either side with a wooden base.
